About Us

Meet the Team

A dedicated team of thoughtful, experienced and caring dentists, supporting all ages from children to great grandparents.

All our dentists have shown strong commitment to lifelong learning through their careers, long before this was a Dental Board requirement.

Dr Chris Callahan
BA BDSc FRACDS FADI FICD FPFA

Chris studied Dentistry at Melbourne University. After graduation he was Resident Dental Officer at the Alfred Hospital and then entered general practice in several locations, including Moorabbin, Kew and Coburg.

He began practice at Malvern Village Dental in 1990.

Since 2002, Chris is a visiting consultant at the Alfred Hospital. He has particular interest in removable prosthodontics, dental materials and special needs dentistry.

Chris enjoys treating families, whether children, parents, grandparents or occasionally great grandparents. Each generation can support the family experience of dentistry, and Chris finds the privilege of being an “extended family member” one of the most rewarding parts of practice.

His other service to the dental community has included Victorian Presidency of the Australian Dental Association, membership of the RACDS Council, and work for the Dental Practice Board of Victoria.

Outside of practice, he enjoys food, wine, music, long walks and swimming.

Dr Hayden Tan
BDSc (Hons) UQ

Hayden completed his Dentistry degree at The University of Queensland with honours. Following graduation, he undertook a position as the Resident Dental Officer at The Alfred Hospital, where he continues to contribute to the Unit. He also holds a clinical role at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, providing care for individuals undergoing oncology treatment. In addition, Hayden works at the Melbourne Dental Clinic, where he focuses on the provision of oral appliances for the management of sleep apnoea.

Hayden enjoys all aspects of dentistry and is most happy when he is able to bring a smile to anyone who walks through the door. He has a particular interest in special needs dentistry and is dedicated to creating a comfortable, relaxed environment where every patient feels at ease during their visit.

Hayden maintains a patient-centred approach, where open communication and personalised care are at the forefront, collaborating with patients to achieve a healthy, happy smile.

Outside of the clinic, Hayden is a passionate squash player—a sport he’s enjoyed since the age of 12. The game’s community spirit, friendly competition, and challenging pace have helped instil a drive to constantly improve. When he’s not on the court, you’ll likely find Hayden on the hunt for the best pastries in town or unwinding with a good anime series.

Dr Sophie Zheng
BSc DDS

Sophie completed her Bachelor of Biomedical Science at the University of Auckland in New Zealand, followed by her Doctor of Dental Surgery at the University of Melbourne.

Much like her colleagues at Malvern Village Dental, Sophie began her career at The Alfred Hospital as a Resident Dental Officer. She also works with the Royal Flying Doctor Services, delivering dental care to remote communities across New South Wales and previously spent time volunteering as a dentist in the mountain villages of Nepal.

Sophie is dedicated to providing thoughtful dental care that addresses your needs as an individual. While she enjoys the technical side of dentistry, her favorite part is getting to know her patients and hearing their stories.  Outside of work, Sophie loves travelling, diving, playing the violin and has a major sweet tooth.
